A new SELECTED POEMS has been published by Cape, drawing on poems from Michael’s six previous collections from Soft Keys (1993) to Drysalter (2013). The book has been awarded a Special Commendation by the Poetry Book Society.
Michael’s Radio 4 verse drama ‘Men Who Sleep in Cars’, set in Manchester on the night before England’s first game at the last World Cup, has been shortlisted in two categories – Best Play of the Year, and Best Script of the Year – in the BBC Audio Drama Awards 2015.

Drysalter won the Forward Poetry Prize in October 2013, and is currently shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize.

Michael’s 6th poetry collection – ‘Drysalter’ – to be published by Cape in April 2013, has been made the Poetry Book Society’s Summer Choice, and shortlisted for the 2013 TS Eliot Prize for poetry.
James MacMillan’s opera Clemency – with libretto by Michael – was co-commissioned by Boston Lyric Opera, Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and the Britten Sinfonia. It was performed at the Royal Opera House in 2011, and at the Edinburgh Festival in 2012. It was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2012.
‘Edgelands’, by Michael and fellow-poet Paul Farley, has won the Foyles Best Book of Ideas Award 2012, from a very strong shortlist with authors including Stephen Pinker, Edward Glaeser and Simon Baron-Cohen.
